A good EGO hedge trimmer comes down to three things. Blade length, blade gap, and how long your battery will last – so it doesn’t run out when you’re still trimming a hedge. Get these three things just right for your actual hedges – then every cut will be smooth and perfectly even. Get them wrong and you end up sawing through branches the blade was never built to handle. The Ego Hedge Trimmer range runs on a 56V battery system, with laser cut, diamond ground blades that hold their edge far longer than stamped steel ones. Our top-of-the-line model cuts a 61cm path – and can even slice through branches that are up to 26mm thick – something you’ll see in nearly every suburban hedge.
| Spec | HT2410E Value |
|---|---|
| Blade length | 61 cm (24 in) |
| Blade gap | 26 mm |
| Tooth depth | 20 mm |
| Strokes per minute | up to 3,000 |
| Tool weight | 2.8 kg (without battery) |
What Blade Length Should You Buy?
Use the 61cm blade – unless you’re really stuck in a small courtyard space. A longer blade covers more hedge per pass, so a wide established hedge takes half the time to finish compared to a shorter tool. Shorter trimmers also exist for a reason. When your hedge is located in a narrow side passage or very closely surrounds garden beds, a shorter blade will turn corners much better than a longer one just can’t. Most Australian front hedges are wide and open enough that the extra length pays off on the very first job.
How Much Power and Runtime Do You Get?
The 56V ARC lithium battery really sets EGO apart – even from cheaper 18V and 20V trimmers based on sheer power. It will swing your blade up to 3,000 times per minute – never faltering in dense growth, a feat that smaller battery systems simply can’t replicate. Runtime is all about the battery pack you get – and the difference between them is far greater than many users initially imagine until they see the actual specs.
- 2.5Ah battery: around 75 minutes, enough for one small hedge
- 5.0Ah battery: around 150 minutes, covers most weekend jobs
- 7.5Ah battery: around 225 minutes, built for a full day of cutting
Is EGO Worth the Extra Cost?
Yes, if you actually have hedges to maintain, not just one small bush by the letterbox. The 5 year warranty on registered domestic tools tells you EGO expects this thing to last well past a few seasons. An electric trimmer weighing less than 3kg is also much kinder on your shoulders than a petrol model holding its fuel tank and a very heavy engine block. Sound power levels sit at about 96 decibels – quiet enough so you won’t have to alert the entire neighbourhood when you get started. Buy the cheaper trimmer if you trim once a year out of obligation. Buy EGO if hedges are a regular job on your list.
